ENERGY

Facts about green energy programs in the area:

***Electric power is being produced from waste gas at El Estero Wastewater Treatment Plant with a fuel cell (amount = energy demand of 500 homes)

***“Solar Zoning” was established in 1986 for all residential zones in which building height limitations were established to reduce shading of adjacent properties to protect present and future uses of solar energy

Solar Power

Solar power can dramatically decrease heating and energy costs, not to mention making you more self-sufficient and earth-friendly.

Clipper Wind Power

www.clipperwind.com

The fast-growing leader in alternative energy sources, Clipper Wind Power is headquartered in Carpinteria. Since the beginning of modern wind power utilization, the wind market has been heavily dependent on the political situation and a willingness to support this power technology in return for a cleaner environment. This is still the case in most of the main markets, but other aspects are finally beginning to play an important part. The cost effectiveness of modern wind turbines has improved significantly over the years and has opened up new markets for the technology.

In the Western world wind energy is viewed mainly as a supplementary way of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The market drivers in Asia and other parts of the world are an urgent need of additional energy. Even in cases where wind energy is not the cheapest means of obtaining new capacity, it may be chosen due to the fact that it can be installed in dispersed areas where the demand is found and projects rapidly deployed.

WASTE REDUCTION & RECYCLING

The State of California's recycling program was modeled after Santa Barbara's. Currently, the City is moving beyond conventional recycling into composting, the purchase of recycled products and source reduction. More facts:

***Parks & Recreation uses mulching mowers to reduce green waste and the need for fertilizer.

***Citywide diversion from landfills increased from 29% in 1995 to 51% in 2002.

***101,500 tons of material was diverted citywide from landfills in 2003.

***Streets Division and Airport use recycled asphalt in road repair.

***Recycled rubber sidewalks are being tested at various sites around the City.

***Parking stops are made from recycled plastics rather than concrete.

***Recycled materials are being used in playground construction and maintenance, including  recycled tires and mulch for fall surfaces, pressure treated wood with a non-arsenic base, sealed Kids World wood and permeable paving.
